Nick Elliott’s Secret Fakenham

Nick Elliott is a world-renowned rock art photographer, film director, and producer who has made Fakenham his home since 2017.

My Fakenham

In the time I have lived here I have developed a deep affection for Fakenham, captivated by its unique charm and character. The high streets are lined with independent shops that have flourished, creating a vibrant atmosphere that sets it apart from more commercialised areas, this fosters a sense of community that I value and is often lost in other places that I travel to.

Historic Fakenham

I am drawn to the very old parts of Fakenham, including the house where Cromwell’s men stayed, and I love the historic buildings that tell the town’s story; these can easily be accessed by following the Fakenham Lancaster Heritage Trail and scanning the QR codes on the blue plaques.

Fakenham boasts a rich history, complemented by its proximity to beautiful countryside, making it an inspiring backdrop for my work. I love how the town has managed to retain its quaint Norfolk charm, ensuring that residents have everything they need without the need to travel to a big city. The friendly locals and the relaxed pace of life provide a refreshing contrast to urban living.

Inspiration

Fakenham is the perfect sanctuary for artistic expression, allowing me to thrive both personally and professionally while enjoying the serene landscapes and watching deer stroll down Oak Street in the early morning light.

I shot scenes for my film Diamond Dogs in Fakenham, and it has also been used as a location for a John Madden film.  The historic buildings, light and sense of a different time all have an appeal for many artists.

I also staged an exhibition of some of my rock art photography, alongside my Dark Art collection, at Fakenham Frameworks on Norwich Street as part of the Fakenham Art Festival in 2025.

Markets

Fakenham comes alive on a Thursday when the charter market takes over the marketplace in the town centre.  As well as the usual stalls offering food, fashion and goods there is also a flea market that is a great place to pick up more unusual items.  It’s the hustle and bustle that I enjoy, people meeting up and having a chat, all to the background of a street musician.
